    Plants’ responses to drought and shade environments

    Water and light are the most important environements for plants’ growth. These environemts are critical factors needed not only for the survival of plants but also their production. When plants are exposed to drought condition, they change in their anatomical, physiological and biochemical properties. Drought affects plants wildly from their cell structure to growth. It causes higher plastoglobuli, lower starch grain, distortion of thylakoids, disrupted grana and swelling of chloroplast. Plants grown under enhanced light, have increased palisade parenchyma, thicker leaf, higher biomass, increased photosynthesis, lower contents of chlorophyll, carotenoid and nitrogen.Keywords: Drought, plant, shade, wate

    Enabling Multi-Hop Remote Method Invocation in Device-To-Device Networks

    To avoid shrinking down the performance and preserve energy, low-end mobile devices can collaborate with the nearby ones by offloading computation intensive code. However, despite the long research history, code offloading is dilatory and unfit for applications that require rapidly consecutive requests per short period. Even though Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is apparently one possible approach that can address this problem, the RPC-based or message queue-based techniques are obsolete or unwieldy for mobile platforms. Moreover, the need of accessibility beyond the limit reach of the device-to-device (D2D) networks originates another problem. This article introduces a new software framework to overcome these shortcomings by enabling routing RPC architecture on multiple group device-to-device networks. Our framework provides annotations for declaring distribution decision and out-of-box components that enable peer-to-peer offloading, even when a client app and the service provider do not have a direct network link or Internet connectivity. This article also discusses the two typical mobile applications that built on top of the framework for chatting and remote browsing services, as well as the empirical experiments with actual test-bed devices to unveil the low overhead conduct and similar performance as RPC in reality

    Alpha-tocopherol exerts protective function against the mucotoxicity of particulate matter in amphibian and human goblet cells

    Exposure to particulate matter (PM) in ambient air is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders and mortality. The cytotoxicity of PM is mainly due to the abnormal increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The correlation between PM exposure and human disorders, including mortality, is based on long-term exposure. In this study we have investigated acute responses of mucus-secreting goblet cells upon exposure to PM derived from a heavy diesel engine. To this end, we employed the mucociliary epithelium of amphibian embryos and human Calu-3 cells to examine PM mucotoxicity. Our data suggest that acute exposure to PM significantly impairs mucus secretion and results in the accumulation of mucus vesicles in the cytoplasm of goblet cells. RNA-seq analysis revealed that acute responses to PM exposure significantly altered gene expression patterns; however, known regulators of mucus production and the secretory pathway were not significantly altered. Interestingly, pretreatment with alpha-tocopherol nearly recovered the hyposecretion of mucus from both amphibian and human goblet cells. We believe this study demonstrates the mucotoxicity of PM and the protective function of alpha-tocopherol on mucotoxicity caused by acute PM exposure from heavy diesel engines

    A series of connection tests were carried out to study the behavior of connections between concrete filled Square Hollow Section(SHS) columns and composite W-section beams. The test connections were four different semi-rigid types selected for application to multi -story building frames. The initial flexural rigidities were estimated by different theories and compared with the simple beam. Moment-roration relations were simulated using a finite element program and a simple power model was proposed to predict the moment-rotation behavior of connections

    Wave Run-Up Phenomenon on Offshore Platforms: Part 1. Tension Leg Platform

    This study reports on an extensive experimental campaign carried out to evaluate non-linear waves applied to offshore structures in extreme marine environments. An offshore tension leg platform (TLP) model was used to observe the waves around a fixed-type offshore structure. The wave amplitude measured in the experiments of this study was indicated as a wave run-up ratio. Both the first-order analysis and the analysis of the entire wave amplitude were described. The experimental results were compared with the calculations from a potential-based code in order to verify the effectiveness of the developed technology

    Reducing the Energy Consumption of Mobile Applications Behind the Scenes

    Abstract—As energy efficiency has become a key consideration in the engineering of mobile applications, an increasing number of perfective maintenance tasks are concerned with optimizing energy consumption. However, optimizing a mobile application to reduce its energy consumption is non-trivial due to the highly volatile nature of mobile execution environments. Mobile applications commonly run on a variety of mobile devices over mobile networks with divergent characteristics. Therefore, no single, static energy consumption optimization is likely to yield across-the-board benefits, and may even turn to be detrimental in some scenarios. In this paper, we present a novel approach to perfective maintenance of mobile applications to reduce their energy consumption. The maintenance programmer declaratively specifies the suspected energy consumption hotspots in a mobile application. Based on this input, our approach then automatically transforms the application to enable it to offload parts of its functionality to the cloud. The offloading is highly adaptive, being driven by a runtime system that dynamically determines both the state-to-offload and its transfer mechanism based on the execution environment in place. In addition, the runtime system continuously improves its effectiveness due to a feedback-loop mechanism. Thus, our approach flexibly reduces the energy con-sumption of mobile applications behind the scenes. Applying our approach to third-party Android applications has shown that it can effectively reduce the overall amount of energy consumed by these applications, with the actual numbers ranging between 25% and 50%. These results indicate that our approach represents a promising direction in developing pragmatic and systematic tools for the perfective maintenance of mobile applications. I

    High Temperature Deformation Behavior of 8090 Al-Li Alloy

    High temperature deformation behavior, especially the superplasticity of an 8090 Al-Li alloy, was studied within the recent framework of the internal variable theory of structural superplasticity. In this study, a series of load relaxation tests were conducted at various temperatures ranging from 200°C to 530°C to obtain the flow curves of log Δ˙ versus log Δ. The effect of grain size was also examined by varying the grain sizes through a proper thermomechanical treatment. The flow curves were found to be composite curves consisting of contributions from grain boundary sliding (GBS) and grain matrix deformation (GMD) at superplastic temperatures. The activation energy obtained for GMD was 124.9 kJ/mole in the temperature range from 470°C to 530°C, very similar to that for self-diffusion in pure Al

    The Cu atom in the title compound, [Cu(NO3)2(C12H10N2)(CH3OH)], adopts a square-pyramidal geometry, being ligated by two N atoms of the bidentate N-(2-pyridylmethyl­ene)­aniline (ppma) ligand, two O atoms of NO3 ligands and one O atom of a methanol molecule, which occupies the apical position. The phenyl ring on the ppma ligand is twisted out of the pyridine plane, forming a dihedral angle of 42.9 (1)°. In the crystal, inter­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between methanol and NO3 ligands form an extensive one-dimensional network extending parallel to [100]

    COMPARISON OF PROPRIOCEPTION PERCEPTION TEST BETWEEN GOLFER AND NON-GOLFER USING TILTING PLATFORM

    The purpose of this study was to test proprioception perception and compare between collegiate golfers and non-golfers using tilting platform. Sixteen male and fourteen female golfers and fifteen male and thirteen non-golfers were participated. All participants were performed perception test on the tilting platform. Frequency analysis and independent t-test were performed using SPSS 24.0. Alpha set at .05. Most participants were perceived from 1° to 2° of slopes and perceived left-right (target direction) slope than forward-backward slope. Repeated practice such as walking on the uneven ground or standing on sloped ground might help to improve proprioception perception. Further research using a tilting platform will be to develop the training program
